Use of Pool Covers for Indoor Pools

Postby ozdroggy01 » Thu Feb 11, 2010 9:00 am

All papers discussing heat loss from indoor pools clearly identify surface evaporation as the most significant factor and that the use of a pool cover can reduce heating requirements caused by evaporation by 50% to 70% and also save water.

I would be interested in the procedures implemented in other villages regarding the use of a POOL COVER – either PVC or Chemical – on their INDOOR pools. In particular:

1. Is your indoor pool and/or spa covered when “not in use”?
2. Approximate total hours per day that it is covered?
3. Is covering/uncovering undertaken by village staff and by whom?
And/or
4. Is covering/uncovering undertaken by residents and by whom?

Further, do any villages supplement the heating of the INDOOR pool with solar pool heating.

Thanks.

In response:
1. Is your indoor pool and/or spa covered when “not in use”? = Yes
2. Approximate total hours per day that it is covered? = 10 to 12
3. Is covering/uncovering undertaken by village staff and by whom? = No
4. Is covering/uncovering undertaken by residents and by whom? = Yes, a volunteer Resident on a roster basis.

Further, do any villages supplement the heating of the INDOOR pool with solar pool heating. Yes, both solar and gas heating.

The indoor pool is covered in my village under the current policy approved by Residents and Management for about 7 or 8 months of the year, dependent on weather conditions and at varying times (not during the day). The pool is heated by solar panels on the roof of an adjoining building and supplemented mainly in the winter with gas heating which is very expensive.

Thanks for your sole reply John. I am disappointed that there is not more interaction on this forum generally but I suppose all the "old people" just can't be bothered

So I gather that you only cover during the winter months when the outside temperature and pool house temperature is greatest.

When you say

is that like the first to use the pool at the start of the day and the last after say 5PM?
